DAY 1

Day 1: Dong Hoi airport. Phong Nha Ke Bang cave (B)

On arrival at Dong Hoi airport in the morning, you will be picked up and driven to your hotel for breakfast. Then, you will go to the Son River. From there, a boat will take you to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The park’s limestone formations, grottoes and caves are impressive, as is the surrounding primeval forest, the largest in Vietnam. Some believe Phong Nha to be the world’s largest limestone mountain range, a highly dubious claim. The main cave, Phong Nha, takes the name of the whole network of caves and sinkholes. It’s the most accessible and, from a visitors point of view, the most attractive. As is the culture in Vietnam, when the cave was discovered the large formations were given fanciful names, such as the Fairy Caves, Royal Court and Buddha, complete with imaginative legends. For the speleologist, Phong Nha’s intricate network of underground rivers, caverns and passageways, as yet not fully mapped, is of greater interest. Limited access to the larger complex can be obtained, but only for authorized research purposes. You’ll return to Dong Hoi and go ahead to Hue for an overnight stay.
